The Ultimate Gorilla Trekking Packing List

Gorilla trekking is a physically demanding but incredibly rewarding experience. Being well-prepared with the right gear will ensure you can focus on the encounter rather than your discomfort.

Essential Clothing

  • Long-sleeved shirts and trousers: To protect against stinging nettles and insects.
  • Sturdy hiking boots: With good grip and ankle support.
  • Gardening gloves: Useful for grabbing onto vegetation during steep climbs.
  • Rain jacket or poncho: Even in the dry season, rain can happen at any time in the rainforest.
  • Wide-brimmed hat: For sun protection.
  • Gear and Accessories

  • Daypack: To carry your water, lunch, and camera gear.
  • Walking stick: Often provided by lodges or the park, but highly recommended.
  • Refillable water bottle: Stay hydrated!
  • Camera with extra batteries: You'll want to take plenty of photos.
  • Health and Safety

  • Insect repellent: Essential for the forest.
  • Sunscreen: Even under the canopy, the sun can be strong.
  • Personal first aid kit: Including plasters and antiseptic wipes.
  • Remember that you can hire a porter at the park headquarters to help carry your bag and provide assistance on steep sections. This also supports the local community!
